Last April, BioValue joined the 43rd Annual Conference of the International Association for Impact Assessment in Dublin, Ireland.

On the 25th of April, BioValue took part in the 43rd annual conference dedicated to climate change and biodiversity loss organized by IAIA, the International Association for Impact Assessment. IAIA is the leading global network on best practice for informed decision of policies, programs, plans and projects, bringing together experts and decision makers from over 100 nations.

The annual conference was focused on the need for more resolute action on climate change and biodiversity loss, supported by impact assessment practice. It also stressed how the realignment of policy and practice involves all sectors of society and calls for a Just Transformation. The immediacy of the required actions and the role of impact assessment provide the right nexus to push boundaries, innovate, and place environments and societies at the center of all decisions.

BioValue was present during the session ‘Pathways to biodiversity gain (II)’, under the topic on Biodiversity and ecology. On behalf of the project, Margarida B. Monteiro,  Ana Soares, Maria Partidário (University of Lisbon – Instituto Superior Técnico) Sanne Vammen Larsen and Lone Kørnøv (Aalborg University) presented ‘Catalyzing transformation in in spatial planning: Environmental Assessment for biodiversity valuation’.

The study regarded the analysis of 41 Environmental Reports of Portuguese cases, divided by Environmental Impact Assessment Reports, and Strategic Environmental Assessment Reports. Through a revision against ‘best practices’, themes and indicators were valued, to benchmark Portuguese practices against biodiversity guidelines.

The project’s goals and ambitions about transformative change in spatial policymaking and infrastructure development were highlighted. The IAIA24 conference was a unique opportunity to display the results to a network of communities in the field, to share the project and receive feedback.
