Trento Municipality launched implementation plans for the Fersina River revitalization

The Municipality of Trento has officially presented its detailed revitalization plan for the Fersina River, an initiative that has taken shape through the work developed within BioValue.

On the 24th of February, Trento Municipality, one of the Arenas for Transformation in the European BioValue project, organized a conference to officially present the implementation plan related to Fersina River revitalization. The event marked a significant milestone in Trento’s strategy to integrate biodiversity into urban planning while enhancing the accessibility and ecological value of the Fersina.

BioValue provides a framework for embedding biodiversity considerations into territorial policies, and Trento has leveraged this knowledge to design an ambitious project aimed at transforming the Fersina into a vibrant, accessible, and ecologically rich urban waterway.

Next steps

Starting this summer, work will commence in the confluence area of the Fersina and the Rio Salè, focusing on improving accessibility, restoring natural habitats, and enhancing the river’s environmental quality. The plan includes the construction of a stepped river access point and a ramp, the rehabilitation of gravel islands, and the creation of a green area with pedestrian and cycling paths connecting to the Alexander Langer Garden. Additionally, sections of concrete at the Rio Salè confluence will be removed to restore a more natural riverbed, enhancing water quality and habitat conditions.

Further interventions will include the installation of large stones to improve water oxygenation and crossing opportunities, protective railings, safety signage, and the development of a “counter-facade” on the left bank of the Rio Salè to promote the settlement of native plant and animal species. Looking ahead, the project envisions a broader transformation of the river into an urban park, with additional naturalization efforts, enhanced lighting, and new safety features ensuring accessibility for all.

This initiative builds upon previous steps in the Fersina’s redevelopment, which were highlighted in an earlier announcement available here: link to previous news release.

By advancing this project, Trento reaffirms its commitment to sustainable urban transformation, positioning the Fersina as a model of coexistence between city life and biodiversity. The Municipality’s efforts within BioValue continue to demonstrate that nature-based solutions can enhance both urban quality and ecological resilience, creating a greener and more livable environment for all citizens.
